“Delicate shades of sun bleached pastel colors reign supreme in Ropa Vieja, a documentary series shot by Swiss-Chilean photographer Laura Gauch while on a trip to Cuba. Extensive rows of wind-cuddled cotton garments left to air dry on repetitive washing lines, almost reminiscent of public art installations set up to interact with the surrounding nature and attract the eyes of curious passers-by, thread the story together. The scorching heat of the seasonless country can be perceived through the muted palette and color association of the scenes immortalized by the observing eye of Laura, who approached the project as a visual diary rather than a documentary.
An ode to the necessary gestures of daily life, a survey of the essential synergy between space, human and nature. “ - written by Naomi Accardi for Miilkiina
